Recording tips

Getting the best recording

Konote transcribes what the microphone hears, so on the table is usually enough, and a few habits make it better.

  1. Start a minute early

Start before the meeting, so the first words are on the recording.

  2. Watch: wrist uncovered

Wear it as usual. A sleeve over the watch makes the sound muffled; arm on the table rather than your lap helps.

  3. iPhone: on the table

On the table it hears everyone well; the bottom edge toward the speaker sounds best. In a pocket or a bag it is muffled.

  4. Several devices: spread out

Put each in a different part of the room. Konote uses the clearest.

  5. Away from noise

Vents, projectors and laptop fans cover quiet voices. Keep your iPhone off the laptop.

  6. Online calls on a Mac

Konote records both sides of the call. Headphones are fine.

Good to know

Long meetings
Konote sets no time limit. Keep your watch charged for long meetings: watchOS can pause a recording when the battery runs low.
Phone calls
iOS doesn’t let apps record phone or FaceTime calls. If one comes in, Konote pauses and picks up again after the call.
Outdoors and on site
Konote has no wind-noise filtering. Set your iPhone on a surface near the people talking, away from wind and machines.
